[Web4lib] Next new thing?

Bernie,

I'm not sure, but it seems collaboration (providers *with* customers) of
information is likely where we're headed, a convergence if you will across
former barriers and lack of tools to reach out and work "together" on an
information problem, provide pathways and directions, or "established
routes," to solutions or answers.

Think about "My Answers.com." Customization and personalization of
information.
And take it to a Library's mission, and we can provide tools for customized
"views" of our collections and resources, alerts, and notifications, a
feedback loop between our staff and their work, and the needs and interests
of our users --in a visible portal where we can "watch" the changes, or
"collaborate" on them.

Another variation on this theme would be providing and enabling tools and
applications for RSS feeds, Web feeds, alerts, through the Library. There's
no good reason we couldn't provide and host "MyLibrary" pages for each
patron. And let them build it from our resources; database contents; news
and other Internet "feeds," and so on.

That would bring them in, perhaps, to the Library's Web site, if not the
libraries. And, as the connectedness and utility nature of the Internet
grows, we will probably see more real growth "online" than in our bricks and
mortar visits and transactions.

Best,
DrWeb
