Where I work (not a library) we're still using version 5 of the WebTrends
Reporting Center eBusiness edition, and we like it a lot. It does a good
job, and can generate colourful graphs and tables that impress executives
while also allowing low-level analysis of particular pages and
directories. We find it can chew up a fair bit of CPU and disk space, but
our raw logs are enormous and take up a lot more room. Generally we're
very pleased with it. The only real problem I've had was when I upgraded
from 4 to 5 and it mangled everything. I'd be careful about doing any
more upgrades in place.
One annoying thing is that it only does pre-generated reports and you
can't do live queries to find out about specific URLs. I think the more
expensive version of 5 does that, and 7 does too. In 7 they've also moved
to a different pricing model where you pay more if you get more hits,
which seems pretty cheap of them. It's not a fair way to billing for web
log analyzers.
We run WebTrends on a machine inside our firewall, away from the public.
We scp the logs over every night.
