Er, the adware version is free. The registered version is $39. It's an
important difference for a lot of people.
I've been a registered version for years, but find myself using Opera
less and less. I don't think it's technically ahead of Mozilla/Firefox
any more, and I don't think it really has a performance advantage to
speak of. YMMV of course, depending on hardware. Opera is full of
clever ideas, but they're packed in around some firmly set
idiosyncracies that are just barely enough to drive some number of users
away. For someone migrating from IE, for example, a lot of little
things will just seem weird.
Ultimately, the benefit to having multiple viable browsers (definitely
including Opera) is that they can all benefit from each other's good
ideas. So Opera and Mozilla can build off each other's creativity and
maybe get us caught up to where we should have been years ago in terms
of browser usefulness.
