I don't go quite back that far but I remember a huge uproar on Usenet 
when one of the first Internet Service Providers that  had the gall 
to tag all of the postings from it's members with a signature which 
was construed as a commercial solicitation.  If I recall it was a 2-3 
line signature which mentioned their name and a phone number to call 
to join the service.
