If you want to treat them as database records, maybe the answer is not 
to export them from the source database to begin with, or to re-import 
them into another database you have access to.  If you want to treat 
them as documents, SWISH-E is a good tool for doing full text searches 
against XML.  Free download at <http://swish-e.org/>.
