POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
HEAD, LIBRARIES WEB SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Systems, the
Head, Libraries Web Services Department manages technical support for
the University of Houston Libraries’ database-driven Internet Web
servers, intranet Web server, and other special-function Web servers
(e.g., electronic reserves, ILLiad, and TDNet). Works with library
staff and other users to develop, deploy, and support database-driven
production websites and empowers content creators by providing tools and
architecture that support their needs. Works closely with: (1) the
Head, Computer Systems and Networking, who manages general server,
workstation, and network support, (2) the ILS Coordinator, who manages
the Innovative Interfaces Millennium integrated library system, which
serves four independent libraries on three UH campuses, and (3) the
Assistant Dean for Digital Library Planning and Development, who
facilitates new digital initiatives. Supervises the work of one FTE
exempt technical staff member. Serves on the Libraries' Web Management
Committee. Actively participates in the work of one or more library
units outside of the Systems Division (e.g., by working shifts at the
Information Desk). Librarians hold academic ranks pursuant to the
University of Houston Librarians’ Governance document. They are
expected to develop a record of service and professional involvement.
Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree.
Progressively responsible full-time information technology work
experience, including experience developing and managing Web sites;
experience developing database-driven Web sites; knowledge of standard
web design tools and languages; significant knowledge of information
technology best practices, standards, issues, and trends relevant to
research libraries; ability to cooperatively set and effectively attain
goals in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment; and strong
analytic, problem solving, communication, and negotiating skills. Well
developed user-focused service orientation. Strongly preferred: Work
experience with ColdFusion, CSS, Apache, JavaScript, SQL programming,
SQL Server, and Windows NT Server or Windows 2000 Server. Desirable:
Supervisory experience; demonstrated ability to design attractive,
highly effective, complex, large-scale Web sites; knowledge of Linux,
PHP, Perl and MySQL. General knowledge of computer programming and data
structures.
Salary: Expected hiring range: $50,000-$55,000, depending on
qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement
programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available;
release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local
income tax.
Library Information: The UH Libraries are a member of the Association
of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, and the
Texas Digital Library Alliance. They hold over 2 million volumes and
have a current materials budget of $6 million. Total staff includes 48
