Yes, you can backdate or forward date posts. A cron job and
tweaking/twiddling is not required. When the alloted day/hour/minute/second
is reach, the forward or future-dated post is published. If you backdate a
post, which I've done, then it's published for that old date.
There's also a way, I think maybe through a WordPress plugin, to make posts
"sticky" so they stay at the top. Some other systems like LiveJournal let
you make sticky posts by future-dating and publishing them. WordPress,
however, won't let you publish something that's in the future until its time
arrives.
