Web Services Library Faculty 

Web Services Library Faculty: Illinois State University’s Milner Library seeks 
a high-energy professional for a 12-month tenure-track/tenure leading position 
to coordinate the development of its library web services. This creative, 
service-oriented individual will collaborate with library faculty and staff at 
all levels to fully utilize opportunities offered by a dynamic web site, 
provide overarching programmatic guidance while possessing the underlying 
technical knowledge of web design. Leading an appointed Web Services Team, this 
position will maximize the potential of a constantly evolving array of web 
offerings, focus on student learning through usability studies, find creative 
challenges in numerous design opportunities, and build on already high levels 
of support throughout campus for library partnerships and participation. 
Collaborates constructively with campus technology units, and represents Milner 
positively in campus, local, and statewide consortia. Participates in 
departmental, library, and university governance. Accumulates a record of 
scholarly achievement and service for tenure and promotion. Participates in 
evening/weekend reference desk rotation, as well as Systems help desk. Reports 
to Systems Division Head.

University and Library: As Illinois’ oldest public university, Illinois State 
University offers an outstanding education to 17,500 undergraduates in 35 
disciplines, and 2,500 graduate students in diverse master’s and doctoral 
programs. Illinois State is located in Normal/Bloomington, a growing community 
of 100,000 three hours from Chicago and Indianapolis and four hours from St. 
Louis. Milner Library (http://www.mlb.ilstu.edu) supports ISU’s academic 
programs with a service-focused staff of 100, an institutional budget of nearly 
$7 million, and a collection of over 1.6 million volumes. Milner’s in-house 
Systems Division of two faculty and 9.5 FTE support staff support IBM AIX, 
Linux, Windows2000, Oracle database, PHP, Perl, MS Office, and a variety of 
library systems and applications. Milner Library is woven into the fabric of 
the campus at every level, appearing repeatedly in the campus strategic plan, 
the campus facilities plan, and ISU capital campaign plan – all evidence of 
ISU’s commitment to excellence in its library. Interrelated Systems/campus 
projects include digitizing a campus slide library, a campus-wide digital 
resources management project, a major multimedia grant with College of 
Education (Adventure of the American Mind), participation in the campus portal 
project, and more.

Qualifications required: ALA-accredited master's degree in library/information 
science. Second master's degree, a certificate of advanced studies, or a 
doctorate required for tenure. User-centered web design skills and recent web 
services management skills in progressively more responsible positions. 
Demonstrated ability to develop effective complex web sites. Experience in 
digitization and use of web development tools. Excellent communication skills 
with the ability to move seamlessly from the technology environment to the 
teaching/ learning arena, and to write, speak, design, or teach as needed. 
Proven ability to successfully initiate, track, and manage multiple detail-
oriented projects simultaneously. Evidence of ability to meet promotion and 
tenure requirements.

Qualifications Strongly Preferred: Awareness of library vendors as well as 
trends and innovations in web-based products. Success in working effectively 
with all types of colleagues, including library faculty and staff, and 
students. Able to fit productively into the unique design process and working 
styles of technology professionals in an academic institution. Highly skilled 
in managing and mediating change in a constantly changing technological 
environment.

Salary and benefits: $48,000 at assistant professor, negotiable depending on 
education and qualifications. 24 days vacation, 12 days sick, and 11 paid 
holidays per year. Self-managed, portable, or state retirement plan.
