Senior Assistant Librarian (Tenure Track with Possibility of Credit toward
Tenure)
DEPARTMENT: LIBRARY USER SERVICES
STARTING DATE: January, 2005
DUTIES: California State University, Los Angeles seeks a knowledgeable and
experienced librarian to coordinate all digital resources and services. The
Digital Resources Librarian will assist in the transition towards a strong
digital library environment. S/he will serve on the Knowledge Resources Task
Force and User Interface Task Force, and participate in Library-wide
planning as assigned. This librarian will oversee the provision of network
access to over 100 online databases, coordinate ILL/Document Delivery and
E-Reserves, provide database training; assist in the cataloging of
electronic resources, research and analyze vendor products, and review
licensing agreements. S/he will also help in planning, implementing, and
evaluating the utilization of system-wide digital resources access
middleware; assist with development of user-oriented policies and procedures
pertaining to the use of digital resources; and collaborate in establishing
goals and priorities. May also participate in instruction, reference and
liaison assignments.
All library faculty positions report to the Associate University Librarian.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited program at an accredited
institution of higher education; experience coordinating the acquisition,
processing, and maintenance of networked electronic resources; strong
information technology skills; effective oral and written communication
skills; ability to work independently and in collaboration with others;
flexibility and ability to adapt to a changing environment; ability to
balance multiple responsibilities; potential for research, scholarly and/or
creative activity involving students; continuing commitment to professional
development; demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a
multiethnic, multicultural environment.
DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Two or more years of experience
implementing and managing electronic library resources; ability to create
and provide reports on a timely basis; knowledge of and experience with
electronic publications licensing; demonstrated leadership and project
management skills; current awareness of new trends and standards dealing
with digital libraries, as well as library research enhancement tools such
as Metalib and SFX; experience using open standards such as Z39.50 and open
URL; experience working in a consortium for database access; experience with
HTML, JAVA and other web development tools; experience working with
integrated library systems.

THE LIBRARY: The Library's mission is to support the academic programs of
Cal State L. A. through instruction, collections, technology and services

information resources. This support empowers our constituencies to develop
the information and technological competencies necessary to achieve their
educational, research and professional goals; succeed in the workforce;
apply lifelong learning skills; and participate in a diverse society.
The Library has 16 full-time faculty, additional part-time faculty and a
staff of about 30. Librarians have full faculty status and the University
has a collective bargaining agreement with the Faculty. The Library is
organized in four units: User Services, Collection Services, Information
Technology and Administrative Support. All Library faculty have a base in
either User Services or Collection Services.
The Library has a comprehensive web site that provides network access to
over 100 online databases, the Library's INNOPAC catalog and the Pharos
system. Off-campus access is provided via a proxy server. The physical
collection includes more than one million volumes with over 2,000 current
print subscriptions and licensed access to approximately 13,000 electronic
journals. The Library participates in the Federal Depository Library
Program.
SALARY RANGE: Initial salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
will be within the range of: $50,100 - $69,540 at the rank of Senior
Assistant Librarian. Merit increases may be earned in subsequent years.
Tenure normally granted with 7th-year reappointment, however credit toward
tenure is negotiable. Ten-month appointments are available upon request with
proportional reduction in salary. Limited relocation expenses may be
provided.

POSITION II: INFORMATION LITERACY COORDINATOR

experienced librarian to coordinate the Library's strategic and operational
planning for its information literacy program. The Information Literacy
Coordinator serves as the College Services and Instruction Task Force
Leader, coordinates all aspects of library instruction, and serves as the
Library's Community College Outreach Liaison. S/he will be assisting the
John F. Kennedy Memorial Library in integrating information literacy into
the University curriculum.
The Information Literacy Coordinator also participates in the provision of
instruction, reference service, preparation of instructional materials,
including Web resources, serves as Library Liaison to units of the academic
community, and on task forces as assigned. S/he will also help in the
development of user-oriented policies and procedures, and collaborate in
establishing goals and priorities for the Library.
