Apologies for multiple posts...
LITA's hugely popular regional institute, XML and Libraries, will be
held at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday, May 9,
2003. This institute is co-sponsored with the Missouri Library Network
Corporation (MLNC) and Washington University. Registration for the
workshop is now open at http://www.lita.org/institut/mlnc/xml.html.
The workshop covers the history of XML, why librarians should care
about XML, using XML on the Web (including stylesheets), using XML for
data interchange, and using XML for metadata. This workshop is
especially productive for library webmasters and systems librarians, but
is also useful to anyone who is interested in web technology, data
representation, or who wants to know what XML is all about. A basic
familiarity with HTML is assumed.
Recent workshop participants had this to say about XML and Libraries:
"The 'nuts and bolts' of XML were very clearly explained
"
"I enjoyed the style of the presentation and the thoughtfulness with
which questions were answered."
"Ron Gilmour was a fantastic presenter and his knowledge and coverage
of the topic was fantastic."
The presenter, Ron Gilmour works as Science & Technology Coordinator at
the John C. Hodges Library at the University of Tennesee at Knoxville.
He received his MLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill, where he also earned an MS in biology. His recent work includes
experimenting with methods of serving XML-encoded data and ways to use
XML to represent biological systematic information.
