Virtual Reference Coordinator
The General Libraries
The University of Texas at Austin

The Virtual Reference Coordinator, a LSTA grant funded position, is charged 
with planning and implementing a collaborative virtual reference service 
for distance learners across the University of Texas System.  The 
Coordinator will perform grant program administration including, 
communicating with UT System component schools for participation and input, 
coordinating research and review of relevant resources and products, 
documentation and reporting as necessary, and acting as liaison between UT 
System Digital Library and component schools to coordinate activities and 
resolve questions and problems.  The position reports to the Licensing 
Coordinator, Digital Library Services Division.  This grant funded position 
ends August 31, 2003, with the possibility of continuation.

The UT System Digital Library Virtual Reference Coordinator works within 
the distance learning unit of the Digital Library Services Division (DLSD), 
located in the Perry-Castaneda Library (PCL), the main library of the 
University of Texas at Austin General Libraries 
(http://www.lib.utexas.edu/index.html).  DLSD provides a variety of 
technical and end-user support functions to UT Austin, UT System, and beyond.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Master of Library Science degree from an ALA 
accredited graduate program. Two years of library working experience in a 
reference environment.  One year of experience working in a technologically 
complex environment with microcomputers, including Microsoft Word and 
Excel, FileMaker Pro or other database software, web browsers, HTML editing 
software, and chat software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Familiarity with technological aspects of 
off-campus library services including experience with delivery.  Working 
knowledge of networked information resources, search engines and chat 
software is desirable.  Preference will be given to individuals who have 
experience working on a virtual reference desk, in a consortial 
environment, on grants, and with training and/or instruction.  The ability 
to communicate effectively with a variety of persons, including 
non-technical and technical staff, with staff in other libraries, and with 
vendor representatives is necessary.  Demonstrated excellent organizational 
and supervisory skills, effective writing, public speaking, teaching, and 
problem-solving skills.  Ability to work collaboratively with diverse 
populations, well-developed management, team-building, and decision-making 
skills.  Initiative, creativity, flexibility, and the ability to facilitate 
change and meet deadlines in an unstructured and time sensitive 
environment.  Knowledge of copyright and licensing issues, and scholarly 
communication patterns as well as other issues facing 
libraries.  Demonstrated potential for leadership.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Salary range is $38,000 - $40,000, depending upon 
qualifications and experience.  No state or local income tax.  Standard 
state benefits package including annual vacation and sick leave, paid 
holidays, retirement plan and health insurance (comprehensive major medical 
plans or HMO plans, dental plans, vision, life, disability).  Deferred 
compensation and tax sheltered annuity programs also available.
