PicoSearch is now charging to search any pages that are over 250k.
Can anyone recommend a free script that shows the context of the search
term(s) in the results like PicoSearch?
TIA,
Nancy

PicoSearch says they'll index up to 1500 pages for free, that's a
great deal. If you have very long files (containing more than 250K
of data), your readers will have a hard time navigating find what
they're looking for anyway -- consider breaking those files into
logical chunks for better web readability.

You can check out the other remote search services, but I don't think
there are any others that will index that many pages for free. They
have to pay for their servers and networks and programmers somehow.
My links to them are at

If you really don't have $500 per year, but you have a network
administrator or other programmer, you can download and install one
of the free open-source search engines. Just be aware that they are
not trivial to install, even if you're a power user I recommend
trying ASPSeek, mnoGoSearch, ht://Dig, and SWISH-E on Unix. On
Windows, SWISH-E has a package, you have to have Perl installed
though. My links to these programs and others are at

Best of luck,
