Recommendations sought: Cindex and indexing software

Hello web4libbers,

I am seeking your collective advice on the subject of indexing
software.

We are looking for 'professional indexing software' that will
allow us to build, for example, book indexes.  A software
package called CINDEX has been mentioned, and I am wondering if
people here can recommend CINDEX, or have caveats about this
product.

I am also interested, as always, in alternative software
packages of this kind, and of course any open source software
that may be available.
