***UCLA OPEN POSITION***
Name of Unit:
UCLA Science & Engineering Library
Position Title:
Science & Engineering Librarian
Rank:
Assistant Librarian/Associate Librarian
Annual Salary Range:
$37,920 - $64,164
Description Of Unit:
The UCLA Library System is comprised of the Charles E. Young Research Library,
the undergraduate College Library, and seven subject libraries.
The Science & Engineering Library (SEL) provides collections and services in support
of the research and educational programs of the School of Engineering and Applied
Sciences: Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering,
Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering; the departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry,
Earth and Space Science, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy; and related institutes.
SEL is comprised of a main site housing the engineering, mathematics, astronomy, and
atmospheric sciences materials, most public services staff and librarians, and five divisions
(administration, collection development, cataloging, public services, and interlibrary loan).
Three satellite collections (Chemistry, Geology/Geophysics, and Physics) are housed in
separate buildings. The SEL collection includes over 559,000 volumes, subscriptions to
approximately 7,000 current serials, and over 4 million technical reports. Staffing includes
8.5 FTE librarians, 17 FTE staff personnel, and 12 FTE student employees.
The Geology/Geophysics Collection holds over 118,000 volumes and receives over 2,000
serial titles. It primarily supports the research and instructional interests of the Department
of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS), the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary
Physics (IGPP), geomorphologists in the Department of Geography, water scientists
in the Life Sciences Division and the School of Engineering. The collection also administers
the adjoining Putnam Map Room, a joint library and ESS departmental collection of over
90,000 geoscience and topographic maps. The Geology/Geophysics Collection is staffed
by 1 FTE library assistant and 1.5 FTE student assistants.
The primary materials that support the Department of Atmospheric Sciences are held at
the Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Collection. However, because of the breadth
of the research in atmospheric sciences, some of the materials that support areas such
as climatic and dynamic weather, atmospheric radiation, remote sensing, and atmospheric
and space physics are available in the Chemistry, Geology/Geophysics and Physics Collections.
Duties:
Under the general direction of the Head of Public Services, provides in-depth reference
services, user education, and consultation for the faculty and academic researchers in
the assigned departments and/or institutes. As part of the SEL reference and
instructional services team, participates in the development of instructional modules
and guides for online databases. Actively promotes and delivers seminars, workshops,
and class lectures for SEL's primary clientele. May participate in the work assignment
and evaluation of the Geology/Geophysics library assistant. May train and supervise
the map research assistant for the Putnam Map Room in consultation with ESS.
Under the general direction of the Head of Collection Development, serves as the
selector for SEL disciplines as assigned. Maintains contact with the faculty and
academic researchers in the assigned departments and/or institutes. Manages
and justifies materials budget. Prepares and maintains collection development
policies. Works with the Acquisitions and Cataloging Division to acquire and provide
access to materials. Formulates and implements storage and preservation plans
for the collection. Cooperates with other campus libraries and other important
physical sciences and engineering libraries in resource sharing and planning.
In consultation with the Head of SEL Circulation Services, participates in the
work assignment and evaluation of the Geology/Geophysics library assistant.
In consultation with ESS, trains and supervises the map research assistant for
the Putnam Map Room.
Qualifications:
Required: Demonstrated experience in selecting monographs and serials in
diverse formats and managing a physical sciences and engineering collections
budget. Knowledge of physical sciences and engineering literature. Experience
with search, retrieval, and manipulation of electronic databases. Understanding
of trends, concerns, and methods of scientific research. Familiarity with electronic
resources, including those available on the Internet. Experience working in a highly
automated environment including an online public access catalog and local and
wide area networks. Experience in working with computer hardware and software
including Windows.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, teaching ability, and the interpersonal
skills to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues.
Public services experience, including reference and information literacy instruction.
Experience in integrating innovative learning technologies with traditional learning
resources. Ability to work creatively both in a team environment and independently.
Flexibility in carrying out assignments in response to a changing environment.
Desirable: Subject specialization in the physical sciences, preferably geoscience,
atmospheric science, or an allied discipline. Collection development experience in
the physical sciences, preferably in an academic geoscience, atmospheric science,
or physical sciences or engineering library. Knowledge of cataloging and technical
processing issues, especially those that apply to research materials in the earth,
atmospheric, and space sciences, including maps. Demonstrated interest in
professional and/or scholarly activities (research, publication, or teaching).
