Handheld computing and libraries

Whether you are a novice, a heavy duty handheld
computing user, or anything in between, we hope you
will come to "Point of Care to Your Palm: PDAs Playing
in Peoria!"  Registration deadline for the conference
is May 16.  In addition to information and experiences
of handheld computing in the academic and hospital
medical library, attendees will learn about handheld
devices and their applications which could be adapted
to any library setting. The conference is sponsored by
the OSF Saint Francis Medical Center Library &
Resource Center and the University of Illinois at
Chicago Library of the Health Sciences-Peoria and is
funded by an LSTA grant from the Illinois State
Library.  The Medical Library Association
has approved the morning portion of this course "PDA
Medical Applications and Content for Librarians" for
four hours of continuing education content hours. 

Mari Stoddard, Head of Educational Services at the
University of Arizona's Health Science Library in
Tucson, and a nationally recognized expert on the
topic of handheld computers, is the keynote speaker.
Her keynote speech will address current and future
trends of pdas in the library and health care
professions.  Besides creating and teaching a series
of workshops on palmtops at the
health sciences library, she has presented workshops
and papers on palmtops and information management to
the American Medical Informatics
Association, Medical Library Association, American
Library Association, and the Alliance
for innovation in Science and Technology Information.

The conference will start at 8:00 A.M. and end at 4:30
P.M. Topics to be covered include an introduction to
and basics of pdas; an overview of medical
applications for the pda; selecting and evaluating
medical content for the pda; integrating pdas into
library services and support; and vendor
demos. The day will also include a panel discussion of
the grant project, viewpoints on pda use, and the
library role in pdas from pda users and clinicians.

of the Center for Library Initiatives, Committee on
Institutional Cooperation.

The only cost of the conference is $25.00 to cover
lunch and refreshment
costs. Jumer's in Peoria is offering a special room
rate for the conference of $41 and holding rooms until
