I truely believe that banner ads are truly ineffective anymore. I don't even
see them and I know for a fact that others feel the same. Like you stated,
some have defense programmes against bombardment with banner ads, some have
banner blindness and others just don't care.

As for whether or not they could be more successful, well it's hard to say. I
don't think I'd care if they were less raucous. Many ads I do notice really
aren't nasty "in your face" ads. However, the ones that I absolutly loathe
and think should be completely removed are the ones that appear to be a
message that your computer is giving you. A good example of this are the ones
that say things like "You have a message waiting" or "Your Internet
Connection is slowing" and they offer you an Okay button much the style of
Win 9x programmes. As for the entertainment factor, it'd take a lot for a
banner ad to entertain me. In my opinion, TV ads can be entertaining or funny
because you've got sight and sound mediums working together to produce
something funny or endearing or whatever. Print only has sight. I can name
several TV commercials that I think are funny or entertaining in some way.
Right now, I can only think of one print ad that I thought was good. And
since banner ads are essentially the same as print ads, the same applies.
