Knowledge Manager (Cataloging Section) - University of Nevada, Las Vegas
RESPONSIBILITIES: The UNLV Libraries invite applications for the new position of
Knowledge Manager/ Cataloger
to assist in the organization and bibliographic description of information. As
a member of the cataloging section
(part of the Knowledge Access Management division), this individual will
participate in cataloging and database
maintenance of projects throughout the library, including but not limited to
serials, special collections, music, and
electronic resources. The incumbent will be responsible for performing both
original and copy cataloging in the
MARC format and creating non-MARC metadata records for national, regional, and
local OPACs, electronic
databases, and digital projects. Specific duties include: performs original and
copy cataloging of serials, special
collections, music, and/or electronic resources; stays current with standards
and trends in bibliographic control,
especially as they relate to these formats; develops policies and procedures for
cataloging materials not currently
represented in the online catalog; explores application of non-MARC cataloging
and metadata standards; assists in
review, development, and implementation of departmental workflow, policies and
procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: ALA-accredited degree or its international equivalent; knowledge of
AACR2, MARC21 format, and LC
subject headings and classification; a minimum of two years professional
cataloging experience and experience
with library automated systems and bibliographic utilities (OCLC and Innovative
Interfaces preferred); ability to work
independently and as a team member on a variety of issues in a dynamic
environment; strong communication and
organizational skills; aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to
detail; demonstrated problem-solving
skills; flexibility; ability to prioritize work to ensure that departmental and
library goals are realized; ability to work
effectively in a production-oriented environment; and the ability to engage in
scholarly pursuits and provide service
to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Library
and University standards.
PREFERRED: Familiarity or experience with serials, archival, music, and/or
special
formats cataloging; familiarity with or interest in established and emerging
metadata
standards, especially Dublin Core and Encoded Archival Description; familiarity
with
or willingness to learn mark-up languages (SGML, HTML, XML).
ENVIRONMENT: The Knowledge Access Management (KAM) division of Lied Library is
comprised of Cataloging,
Systems, and Web Initiatives. The Cataloging Section currently has four
professionals and seven full-time support
staff involved in cataloging and database maintenance, as well as library
internet and intranet web
design and maintenance. Future initiatives within Cataloging may include
metadata
cataloging, cooperative database design and research with other university
departments,
a digitization center involved in digital library projects and ventures, as well
as
explorations involving electronic publishing and electronic text production.
This is a
highly dynamic and exciting environment for a cataloger/technical services
librarian
interested in exploring the future of knowledge management and organization in
an
academic setting.
SALARY RANGE: This is a tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank.
Salary commensurate with qualifications
