Ever wonder how faculty, staff and students use ejournals? Or whether they
do so at all?
George Porter, Caltech, and Julie Hurd, University of Illinois at Chicago,
will present findings from their complementary studies of electronic journal
use patterns at the ACRL National Conference in Denver. The presentations
will be 9-10 AM, Sunday, March 18, in the Colorado Convention Center Rooms
A101/103.
George Porter and Ed Sponsler have conducted a study of electronic journal
use using click-through tracking technology. Questions examined include the
relationship between use of electronic journals and their print versions;
the use of table of contents websites for print journals and its impact on
document delivery and interlibrary loan.
Julie Hurd, Deborah Blecic, Martin Brennan, and Ann Weller identified early
adopters of ejournal technology on campus, then set about interviewing
faculty. They inquired about when, how and why faculty use ejournals; good
and not-so-good features; impacts on teaching and research. They confirmed
many of their hypotheses but were also surprised by some of the responses.
