ENVIRONMENT: Northwestern University is a major private research 
institution with an enrollment of more than 17,000 students on two 
lakefront campuses in Evanston and Chicago. The University Libraries 
have collections totaling more than 4 million volumes. The annual 
materials budget is $7 million of which approximately $1 million is 
currently devoted to electronic resources. The Library uses 
Endeavor's Voyager system and operates in a UNIX environment. 
Northwestern's high speed network provides the opportunity to 
participate and partner with entities such as the Metropolitan 
Research and Education Network (MREN), the very high speed Backbone 
Network Service (vBNS), Internet2, Abilene, international research 
and education networks through StarTap, and other technologically 
advanced consortiums and educational networks. Northwestern 
University Library is a member of several consortia, including the 
Center for Institutional Cooperation (CIC).

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general direction of the University 
Librarian, the Assistant University Librarian for Information 
Technology (AULIT) provides creative direction for library computing; 
and leads the Information Technology Division, comprised of the 
departments of Library Management Systems and Network & User Support 
Services. The AULIT is responsible for maintaining the Library's 
information technology infrastructure as it relates to the support of 
public and staff computing, development, implementation and ongoing 
management of web-based library systems. The AULIT provides support 
for technical operations relating to web development and digital 
library systems, integration of client/server and web interfaces and 
coordinates digital projects amongst Library units. Serves as the 
Library's representative to the University regarding library 
information and technology and is the Library's representative for 
information technology to the Committee on Institutional 
Cooperation's Center for Library Initiatives as well as to other 
professional organizations and programs nationwide. As a member of 
the Administrative Committee (the University Librarian's cabinet) and 
the Management Council, the AULIT has a prominent role in general 
planning, budgeting and communicating with regard to library 
information systems and technology. And participates in library-wide 
policy decisions.

QUALIFICATIONS: Strong record of dynamic leadership, vision and 
accomplishment in an academic or research library of computing 
services operation including a minimum of five years experience with 
increasing responsibility in technology management and 
administration. Demonstrated achievement in the management of library 
operations, including integrated library systems, distributed 
networked information technologies and the ability to apply them 
within a research library environment. Evidence of collaborative 
long-range planning and implementation skills, ability in defining 
procedures, managing ongoing projects and new initiatives within the 
library. Superior communication, supervisory and management skills, 
evidence of or willingness to participate in relevant professional 
organizations and activities. Accredited master's degree in Library 
Science, Computer Science, or related field.

SALARY: Dependent on qualifications and experience (minimum $75,000).
