LOS ANGELES CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE
Be A Part Of It All.
The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information
Science and Technology (LACASIS) invites you to its January Dinner Program.
The Internet and Web Privacy
Presented by Karen Coyle
Karen Coyle's presentation will explain the privacy risks of Internet use
and how these relate to patron and staff use of the Net. Topics of
discussion include: current U.S. privacy laws, technical solutions to
privacy risks, how libraries can educate the public, IP addresses, cookies
and security issues.
Ms. Coyle has nearly 20 years experience developing computer systems for
libraries. She currently works at the University of California in the
California Digital Library. She is outspoken about the effects, both
negative and positive, that electronic information is having on the social
role of libraries. Her book, "Coyle's Guide to the Information Highway,"
describes the effect on libraries of new developments in the areas of
privacy, public access, copyright, and privacy. Ms. Coyle is active in
Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility. An essay on gender and
computing entitled: "How Hard Can it Be?" appeared in the Seal Press book
"Wired Women: Gender and New Realities in Cyberspace" in 1996.
