Dear Web4Lib'ers,

A network of organizations and individuals has released a joint
statement opposing legislative requirements for school and library
blocking technologies, such as CHIP/CIPA passed by the US Congress
in December. To read and/or endorse the statement, go to
http://onlinepolicy.org/network/statement.htm

A media release announcing the statement is available at
http://onlinepolicy.org/media/010123.jointstatement.htm
as well as some organizing tools, such as lists of spokepeople
for media interviews, speakers for forums on the topic,
and email lists for discussions about blocking technologies.

Of particular interest to web4lib'ers could be the block-lib
list for discussion of blocking technologies in libraries.
As pointed out in the excerpt from the Web4Lib FAQ below,
the Filt4Lib list is long defunct and block-lib would be
an excellent place for such discussions to continue.
You can subscribe to block-lib by sending an email to
majordomo at lists.onlinepolicy.org with the
body of the email message containing the following:

                  subscribe block-lib

Sincerely,

Will Doherty

WEB4LIB FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

....

IS THERE A LIST FOR INTERNET FILTERING?

The subject of filtering software for Internet access is not off
topic for Web4Lib. However, it is a subject which is certainly
capable of generating enough traffic for its own list, and that
list is FILT4LIB. To subscribe, send e-mail to
filt4lib at public.ci.escondido.ca.us with the word "subscribe" in the
subject field, and nothing in the message field.

[As of May 17, 1999, it appears FILT4LIB is defunct. Can anyone
confirm this or point to its new location?]
