Position Available: Digital Technology Specialist, Preservation
Department, Northwestern University Library. Non-exempt (Libaray Assistant
III). Full-time. Supervises part-time Digital Grant Project Assistant,
reports to Digital Technology Librarian.
Job Summary: Under the direction of the Digital Technology Librarian, the
Digital Technology Specialist (DTS) will work with Preservation staff and
staff throughout the Library on activities supporting the use of digital
technology in preserving and increasing access to Northwestern's
collections. The DTS will assist the Digital Technology Librarian in
planning and managing digital collection conversion projects, and will
primarily be responsible for project implementation. The DTS will
supervise one LA 2 and student assistants. It is expected that the
responsibilities of this position will evolve with time due to the rapidly
changing environment of digital technology and computing.
Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor's Degree. Understanding of information technologies,
especially as associated with digitizing books, documents, and images and
making them available on networks. Demonstrated experience in database
development. Knowledge of Windows and/or NT in a PC network
environment. Experience with HTML/XML; Web design; image editing
applications; relational databases; spreadsheet applications. Experience
with imaging technology. Understanding of bibliographic control issues.
Demonstrated troubleshooting skills. Ability to understand and evaluate
technical concepts. Flexibility to work in a dynamic and changing
environment and strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to
take initiative, work independently within a team framework, think
critically, and work well with a variety of people. Ability to assume
significant responsibilities and follow through on them appropriately.
Supervisory experience and general understanding of university research
libraries and/or library preservation.
Preferred: experience with MS Access; DreamWeaver; Adobe Acrobat and/or
other text conversion technology; user interface modeling; JAVA script
and/or other client side programming; Macintosh Operating Systems.
