Visiting Project Coordinator, Illinois Digitization Institute, and
Visiting Assistant Professor of Library Administration
Digital Imaging and Media Technology Initiative

Position Available:
Immediately. A full-time, temporary position at the rank of Visiting
Assistant Professor of Library Administration, funded for one year, with
possible renewal, by the Illinois State Library.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Project Coordinator for the Illinois Digitization Institute (IDI) will
have operational responsibility for developing and implementing a program
of training in the digitization of library and archival materials. The
goal of this project is to develop and provide, in concert with the
Illinois State Library, a program of professional training in digitization
for Illinois libraries and other groups. Specific responsibilities
include developing training modules, including a Web site to provide
instruction and resources related to various aspects of text and graphics
digitization for libraries and archives. These modules will consist of
instruction in the area of project planning, scanning, metadata creation,
materials evaluation, hardware and software evaluation, storage and
retrieval. Additional responsibilities include organizing and presenting
workshops, coordinating collaboration with the Illinois State Library,
collecting and analyzing information, and writing periodic evaluations and
reports. This position involves some travel.
Department:
The Digital Imaging and Media Technology Initiative
(http://images.library.uiuc.edu) of the University Library is a program
devoted to developing effective methods to digitize and provide broad
access to the collections of the University Library. The University
Library is the world's largest public university library with collections
of over 9 million volumes and 20 million items within 42 decentralized
library units, and a network of over 1,000 public and staff workstations.
Each week, more than one million patrons from around the world use the
University Library's online resources through the Internet, and thousands
use the Library's on-site resources on a daily basis. The Library belongs
to the Illinois Library Computer Systems Organization (ILCSO), a 45-member
statewide consortium of academic and research libraries, as well as the
Digital Library Federation and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation
(CIC), an academic consortium of the Big Ten Universities, the University
of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Chicago.
Qualifications:
Required: Accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science,
or an equivalent combination of education and experience beyond the
bachelor's degree; experience with digitization methods (i.e., scanning
print documents and graphical materials for archival purposes);
familiarity with format and metadata standards for creating and managing
digital information; knowledge of and experience with current PC
technologies, including current Windows operating systems, and Web
technology and standards; excellent interpersonal and written
communication skills.
Preferred: Experience with professional education program development;
report and grant-writing experience; experience with leadership roles in
project coordination; experience with digitization of museum, library, or
special collections.
Salary & Rank:
Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and credentials.
Terms of Appointment:
Initial twelve month appointment, with possible renewal dependent on
funding; 24 work days vacation per year; 11 paid holidays; 12 annual sick
leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 days (non-cumulative) per
year if necessary; health insurance, requiring a small co-payment, is
provided to employee (coverage for dependents may be purchased);
participation in State Universities Retirement System is compulsory
(includes several private options), 8% of staff member's salary is
withheld and is tax exempt until retirement); newly hired university
employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are
subject to its deduction.
