preparing items for ftp

Hi,
Our scientists have bulky reports which they wish to make available via our web site using the ftp protocol.  I need to bring myself up to speed on this and to put some procedures into place to ensure that the experience of ftping from our site works well.

Does anyone know of a site which provides tips or sets standards on using ftp in conjunction with your web site.?
