Dominican University's Graduate School of Library and Information Science
Alumni Council and LIBRAS are pleased to
co-sponsor a professional development program designed to update you on
the emerging area of digital publishing. Three speakers will address
three different perspectives on electronic publishing; the
afternoon events will be followed by a reception and the fourth annual
McCusker Lecture, given by Gloriana St. Clair, at 6 p.m. Both events
will be held November 15 on Dominican's campus in River Forest.
An exciting program of speakers exploring a variety of topics of current
interest including:
2:00 The Social Use of Information: Perspectives from the Nineteenth
Century. Dr. Joanne Passet, Associate Professor, Print Culture Studies,
Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Dominican University
Dr. Passet will provide a context within which to understand the
evolution and challenges if the transition from print culture to the
digital environment.
3:00 "Librarians' Role in Compressing the World of Knowledge Into An
Internet Sound Byte" Melissa Koenig, Reference Librarians, University
of Illinois-Chicago
4:00 "Digitizing the Dominican University Archives". Dr. Gertrude
Koh, Professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Studies. Dr.
Koh will describe and display her ongoing work on digitizing materials
selected from the university archives, creating metadata for them and
making them available on the Internet.
5:00-6:00 Reception, Foyer, Old Library
6:00 Portal: a new model for the digital future. Dr. Gloriana
St.Clair, formerly editor of College and Research Libraries and the
Journal of Academic Librarianship; current editor and founder of Portal,
a peer-reviewed, fully electronic journal in library and information
science, published by Johns Hopkins University Press.
