authentication projects toward authentication solutions that cross
institutional boundaries.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Descriptions of several projects that illustrate distributed
approaches to authentication. Also, discussion of development
agendas, adoption of these technologies, and policy issues.
***Thomas Dowling, Assistant Director for Library Systems,
Client/Server Applications,
OhioLINK, describes the OhioLINK authentication service, which
provides remote authentication using 53 patron databases.
***David Millman, Manager of Research and Development, Academic
Information Systems,
Columbia University, describes the Digital Library Authentication and
Authorization Architecture pilot, sponsored by the Digital Library
Federation, which uses digital certificate and directory technology.
***Ken Klingenstein, Director, Internet2 Middleware Initiative, and
Chief Technologist, University of Colorado at Boulder, describes
"Killer Glue," the Internet2 Middleware Initiative, which includes an
inter-institutional authentication
mechanism and a directory of directories.
