THE CALIFORNIA DIGITAL LIBRARY: PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

The California Digital Library (CDL) is the tenth library for the
University of California (UC). CDL is a collaborative effort of the
nine UC campuses, and is organizationally housed at the University of
California Office of the President. CDL is responsible for the design,
creation, and implementation of systems that support the shared
collections of the University of California. Several CDL projects focus
on collaboration with other California universities and organizations to
create and extend access to digital material to UC partners and to the
public at large.

Digital Library Services (DLS) designs the CDL web site and coordinates
its implementation as the delivery mechanism for the CDL's collections,
tools, and services. Identifies, develops, and maintains the CDL's
online tools and services, including the Melvyl Catalog and other
CDL-hosted databases, in conjunction with CDL Technologies. Works with
campus Resource Liaisons to integrate and maintain access to
vendor-supplied tools and services. Works closely with CDL Technologies
to create an application development framework and co-investment model
to leverage campus initiatives for developing tools and services and
integrating them into the CDL.

Laine Farley, Director of Digital Library Services, will talk about the
formation and organization of the CDL. She will discuss some current
and future projects, and what this means to non-University of California
constituencies. Before becoming Director of Digital Library Services,
Laine served as the User Services Coordinator and the Coordinator of
Bibliographic Policy and Services in the UC Division of Library
Automation. She has also served as a reference librarian and
coordinator of bibliographic instruction at UC Riverside, and head of
the Humanities department at the Steen Library, Stephen F. Austin State
University.
