CSS "Overflow" property

Another question for all the web designers out there...

Is there a way to make the CSS positioning overflow property with value set
as "scroll" only scroll in one direction?  I can't find an example of this
and my technical books (you know, all those "teach yourself" type books!)
never mention any associated properties.
