How to construct/design a portal

Hi All,
  Does anyone know of a site or book or have any information for me on
how to construct and/or design a portal? This would be for an intranet.
I have checked out the EIP ideas. And if you have any examples of
intranet portals that I can be allowed to see, I'd be in website heaven
;-).
 Any and all help would be truly appreciated.  If you would respond to
me personally, I will be happy to summarize if anyone is interested.
