Dear Colleague:

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the OCLC Institute invite
you to participate in the second ARL/OCLC Strategic Issues Forum, "Toward
Rethinking Academic Library Performance in the Digital Age," 16-18 February,
2001, at the Mission Palms Hotel, Tempe, Arizona.

Digital computing and networking technologies are dramatically--and
fundamentally--transforming library collections, services, missions, and
methods. But how do we define and measure academic library performance in
the digital knowledge age? How do we measure the right things in the right
ways? What performance measurement tools and methods can help ensure that
academic libraries are--and remain--effective, efficient, and accomplishing
mission-oriented goals in a time of rapid, and sometimes radical, change?

Join your colleagues and conference facilitator Peggy Sundstrom, Ph.D., of
Sundstrom & Associates, in a series of highly interactive exercises and
activities that will help you to create a comprehensive performance
management system for your library.

Our focus and objectives will be:

* Defining new performance standards for academic and research libraries
that reflect the changing realities of the digital age
* Using and adapting the "Balanced Scorecard" method as the basis for a
comprehensive performance assessment program
* Linking performance management systems with strategic objectives
* Integrating new performance measurements into your strategic planning and
management activities
* Advancing the state of the art and practice in academic libraries

Dr. Sundstrom has a proven track record leading strategic planning
activities, facilitating change initiatives, and implementing professional
development programs in academic environments. Her expertise in using the
"Balanced Scorecard" method and her skill at facilitating executive-level
educational programs will help you to create a beneficial program for your
own institution and to contribute to the rewriting of the rules for academic
library performance.
