ANNOUNCEMENT of VACANCY
DIRECTOR, LIBRARY INFORMATION SYSTEMS
California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) invites applications from
individuals interested in joining our dynamic and growing University. With
a current student population in excess of 25,000, CSUS, the capital
University is one of the larger campuses in the 23-campus California State
University system, the largest system of higher education in the nation.
The University is organized around seven colleges. There are approximately
1,400 faculty who provide programs of instruction leading towards bachelor's
degrees in 60 disciplines and master's degrees in 40 disciplines and one
joint doctoral program.
Sacramento is a high growth metropolitan area with a population of

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Director of Library Information Systems is responsible for all aspects
of planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of information
systems and services for the Library of California State University,
Sacramento. Responsibilities include maintaining Novell and NT networks,
online bibliographic and full-text databases, Internet/WWW access, and all
public and staff computers; providing leadership in identifying, evaluating,
selecting, and implementing appropriate new information technologies;
coordinating Innovative Interfaces system support; working with staff in
addressing automation, training, and public access computer issues; and
supervising 3 FTE staff. The Director serves as the Library's lead person
in cooperative projects with University Computing Services and other campus
entities. The Director reports to the Dean of the Library.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and Consultative Role: Working closely with the Library's
faculty and staff, provides leadership in
planning and implementing information systems and library automation
activities/projects which enhance and support the Library's mission and
strategic goals.
Advises the Dean and Library department heads on the application of
technology for the management of information resources.
Serves as a resource and advisor to library staff and faculty in the
selection and installation of computer hardware and software.
Systems Development and Management: Oversees design, development, testing
and maintenance of databases and
required software components and ensures that development tasks are
specified adequately and proceed according to plan.
Ensures that public systems are reliable and operational during all hours of
public access; determines priorities for service and ensures that Systems
staff work effectively with Library employees and vendors to provide
excellent service.
Provides for administration of Novell and NT systems, networked and
stand-alone database applications, programming, hardware acquisition,
network facilities installation and management, and end-user technical
support for networked and stand-alone computer systems (e.g., specialized
databases and CD-ROM applications), OCLC cataloging and interlibrary loan
system, and Library administrative systems.
Ensures proper management and planning for the Library's network, and its
connection to the campus network and the Internet; serves as resource for
and participates in computer development projects.
Ensures that all computer systems and data are secure from hazards and that
functional operations can be maintained throughout the Library; maintains a
formal contingency and disaster recovery plan for all Library systems.
Recommends major hardware and software for purchase.
Systems Office Management: Hires, trains, and manages the Library Systems
team. Conducts performance reviews
for staff to ensure quality; provides and supports development opportunities
for staff. Prepares budget requests and reports.
External Relationships, Entrepreneurship, and Environmental Scanning:
Develops and maintains an effective,
collaborative working relationship with University Computer Services. Works
closely with campus peers and departments to ensure effective interaction
and interfaces between library systems and campus operations.
Identifies and aggressively pursues opportunities for the University Library
to partner with other University departments, other libraries, or vendors in
the development of new information systems and resources.
Develops and maintains excellent relationships with vendors of databases,
software, and hardware.
Maintains awareness of CSU system-wide issues regarding computerized
management and information resource systems, and contributes to
identification and resolution of those issues which have implications for
the Library. Maintains awareness of national issues regarding computerized
management and information systems and contributes to identification and
resolution of issues through appropriate activities. Participates in
professional activities to maintain an in-depth knowledge of current trends
and developments in the application of information technology.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science (ALA accredited), or
advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field; or an equivalent of
relevant education and experience beyond the bachelor's degree.
2. A record of progressively responsible experience in the application of
information technology.
3. Ability to manage and provide strong leadership in a rapidly changing
environment.
4. Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with a diverse
population of faculty, staff, students, and vendors.
5. Successful supervisory experience.
6. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
7. Demonstrated understanding of systems analysis and planning, including
Internet and WWW applications.
8. Evidence of working knowledge of computer hardware, software, and
networking.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Knowledge of a university library's operations, challenges, and
opportunities.
2. Experience in planning, implementing, and managing Novell and/or NT
networks.
3. Experience in managing an INNOPAC integrated library system.
ANTICIPATED STARTING DATE: November 1, 2000
APPOINTMENT: This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan of
The California State University. Minimum salary: $58,000. California
State University, Sacramento has an attractive retirement and benefits
