Basic Function:
The primary focus of the References Services Coordinator is to promote
effective, efficient delivery of reference services that respond to the
needs of the King County Residents. This position reports to an Associate
Director for Public Services and works in close cooperation with Collection
Management Services, Library Managers and reference librarians in the
provision of library reference services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide system-wide leadership for defining the role of reference services
in the King County Library System, now and in the future. Lead the
implementation and on-going administration of the Reference Services.
· Coordinate system-wide back-up support reference services.
· Manage the development and implementation of system-wide programs, events
and other efforts by planning for and managing projects, programs, services,
information, and resources.
· May supervise Answer Line, Medical, Business and Documents Librarians, Web
Services Librarian and Electronic Resources Librarian and ILL.
· Coordinate with other public service coordinators in the establishment of
goals and objectives for providing proactive reference and research
assistance. Support the homework centers for students from K-12.
· Participate in reference staff selection and recruitment. Develop,
motivate and direct the work of department staff, as assigned. Establish
levels of responsibility for staff and delegate appropriate authority.
Establish a work environment that will attain and maintain a high level of
morale. Encourage professional development.
· Conduct performance evaluations for subordinate staff: set appropriate
expectations, and goals.
· Coordinate the selection and distribution of reference materials, both
print and electronic, throughout the library system.
· Provide reference service expertise to other departments and on system
wide projects. Monitor system changes and development for reference service
impacts.
· Develop and administer the annual budget for system reference services.
Authorize, analyze and monitor expenditures.
· Assist KCLS staff with development and promotion of KCLS web pages for
reference services..
· May oversee, manage and administer grant-funded projects and activities.
The position may identify potential resources and promote both financial and
other kinds of support reference services.
· Maintain a professional level of knowledge and skills, and participate in
professional activities.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
· Five years experience working as a public librarian with a minimum of 3
years experience leading reference library service.
· Master of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association
accredited school of Librarianship and/or Washington State certification as
a Librarian.
· Experience developing, implementing and managing large programs for a
diverse population. Ability to assess current resources and creatively use
resources to provide effective service.
· Experience leading change.
· Have a strong understanding and knowledge of reference services for all
patrons, using various media. Keeps current of trends in library reference
services throughout the country.
· Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities and work independently
with minimal supervision. Demonstrated judgement and ability to resolve
conflict with an emphasis on positive outcomes. Ability to work as a member
of a team as well as to be a team leader when necessary and appropriate.
· Ability to inspire staff to ensure reference service is a positive
experience for all library patrons.
· Strong belief in and ability to speak to the importance of intellectual
freedom.
· Ability to communicate easily and effectively, verbally and in writing,
with varied client groups (community and special interest groups, the
general public, and library staff) of all ages, and through written
publications and oral presentations.
· Knowledge of training needs and methods for staff involved in reference
services. Ability to provide clear, effective assistance and training for
staff. Experience making public presentations and providing training.
· Ability to recognize and set priorities, and to use initiative and
independent judgment in a wide variety of situations.
· Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with KCLS
staff, the Board of Trustees, KCLS Foundation, and the public.
· Ability to manage and implement large projects and lead change.
· Knowledge and experience guiding, motivating, and persuading of others.
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; demonstrated
judgment to resolve problems. Ability to work as a team member to
coordinate public service activities that crosses organizational boundaries.
· Ability to work a varied schedule, which will change as necessary and
include significant evening work and weekends.
· Ability to select, develop, evaluate and motivate staff and volunteers.
· Ability to travel to various locations throughout the library system and
the King County Community.
· Valid State of Washington driver's license, or ability to obtain, is
required.
Physical Demands:
· Ability to perform physical requirements of the job, which may include
reaching, bending, lifting, standing for extended periods of time, as well
as changing work sites over the course of a work shift.
· Subject to irregular working hours to attend events and meetings.
· Sitting for extended periods of time while attending meetings. Meetings
may be held anywhere throughout King County.
· Occasional out of town travel for conferences and events may be required.
Work Environment:
· Predominantly office environment.
· Travel to various locations throughout the library system and the King
County community.
Grade: 25
Starting At: $ 4,548.01 monthly
