The following position is available at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
ASSISTANT SYSTEMS LIBRARIAN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, TENURE LEADING
GENERAL INFORMATION: The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is Nebraska's only
Land-grant University and its major comprehensive institution of higher
education. A Carnegie Research I institution, the University offers 35
doctoral programs and 78 masters programs. The total 1998-1999 fall
enrollment at the University was 22,408 students. A member of the
Association of Research Libraries, the Libraries' system and services are
extensive, including 2,250,000 volumes and 20,200 active periodicals and
serials. The Libraries offer both in-house and remote access to a wide
variety of electronic resources. The Innovative Research Information
System (IRIS) currently includes the Libraries electronic catalog, general
and specialized journal indexes, full-text electronic journals, and a host
of Internet resources. Love Memorial Library is the largest library
facility; in addition there are agriculture, architecture, chemistry,
engineering, geology, biological sciences, mathematics, music, and physics
libraries.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Coordinator of the Automated Systems
Office, the faculty member is responsible for providing technical support
and training for staff use of computer applications in an academic
environment. This includes: 1) Providing advanced training and first line
support for library applications and software. 2) Providing staff
training for library supported applications including MS Office, MS
Windows operating systems, and telnet and Web clients with emphasis on the
development/purchase of self-paced training materials. 3) Developing
and/or assisting with the development of computer programs that support
library applications or deliver services over the Web. 4) Working with
groups outside of the Automated Systems Office to explore and assess new
technology by providing training and consultation.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program.
Flexibility and ability to work independently in a rapidly changing
environment and in cooperation with a variety of staff with differing
levels of technical expertise. Ability to work well in groups. Ability
to interact positively and productively with library colleagues, students,
faculty and staff. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent analytical, problem-resolution, and troubleshooting skills.
Desire to work in a technologically challenging environment. Preferred:
Systems experience in a library. Experience or training in Unix and/or NT
and/or Perl programming language. Experience conducting training
programs.
SALARY: $31,000 for a 12-month contract. Salary may be higher depending
upon the qualifications of the successful applicant.
STARTING DATE: January 2000. Appointment date is negotiable.
