ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS AND SERVICES LIBRARIAN. (New Position) San Diego State
University Library is seeking an innovative and customer service oriented
librarian to fill the position of Electronic Systems and Services Librarian.
Reports to the Director of Information and Collection Services. Serves as
public services' liaison to the Library's information systems group.
Participates in the planning, evaluation, implementation, and integration
of Library technology initiatives. Assumes oversight of the Library's Web
site. Serves as a contact for library systems, software, and database
vendors. Participates in the review of database vendor contracts. Serves as
a consultant for trends in library automation. Facilitates and provides
training to Library personnel in the use and support of library technology.
Serves on Library, university, and system-wide committees. May provide
service at a reference desk.
Qualifications:
Required:
* ALA-accredited degree or equivalent foreign degree and a minimum 3
years post-degree experience working within a computer intensive
environment in a library setting
* knowledge of hardware and software for library applications, Unix
and NT servers, TCP/IP networking, Web site applications, integrated
library systems
* skills and knowledge to assume oversight and serve as coordinator
for the SDSU Library Web site
* evidence of commitment to maintain knowledge of new trends in
library and information technology; ability to apply this knowledge in the
planning, evaluation and implementation of new databases, software,
hardware, and data communications
* demonstrated leadership skills in library automation planning
* ability to work collaboratively with and communicate with both
technical and nontechnical library staff.
* experience instructing in the use of technological applications
* understanding of and commitment to public service issues in a
technologically intensive library setting
* strong customer service orientation
* initiative and flexibility to work in a dynamic environment
* excellent analytic and problem-solving skills, including the
ability to integrate detailed work with broad conceptual ideas
* excellent oral and written communication skills
* demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and
promotion under the Library's criteria for library service effectiveness,
professional growth, and service for the University and the community
Preferred:
* experience in an academic library setting
* knowledge of Innovative Interfaces systems
* familiarity with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems
This is a full-time, twelve month, tenure track faculty position. Award of
tenure is dependent upon evidence of continuing library service
effectiveness, professional growth, and service to the University and the
community. Rank of Senior Assistant Librarian. Starting salary range:
$44,892-$56,724. Excellent benefits package, including 24 days annual
vacation.
San Diego State University is the largest of the twenty-three campuses in

In support of this mission, the Library has a collection of over one
million volumes, provides access to numerous electronic resources and
offers a variety of user-focused services. The Library is currently
staffed by 28 librarians, 78 staff members, and 212 student assistants.
There are three reference divisions: General Reference, Government
Publications & Maps, and Science. The Library's 114,000 square foot
addition, opened in 1996, includes a Media Center, an Electronic Reserve
Book Room, and two electronic classrooms. The Library also has two other
electronic classrooms, and the Student Computing Center, all of which are
staffed by Library personnel to support SDSU academic computing. There are
104 workstations in the reference areas, 132 workstations in the lab, and
120 workstations in the electronic classrooms.
The Library uses Innovative Interfaces for its integrated library system.
The Library provides access to over 60 databases, some of which run on the
Library's in-house Innovative Interfaces and OVID systems, others of which
are available from external vendors. In addition, the CSU is currently
developing the Pharos System, an integrated user interface for the CSU
