Annoying url request in web logs

I'd be curious to find whether anyone knows what might be the source of a
failed url request I've seen on a number of hosts. The request is for 
favicon.ico
and is generally in the top level directory, such as
gollygosh.org/favicon.ico

The browser is usually Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98; DigExt)
but the IP address varies. Any clues?
