The Free Library of Philadelphia has received a National Leadership
Grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services for a one year
project to preserve, catalog and digitize over 1200 albumen photographs
and related material relating to the 1876 Centennial Exposition held in
Philadelphia's Fairmount Park.  The project will create a digital
collection that will be searchable on the World Wide Web.   Two
grant-funded positions will be available from December 1, 1999 through
November 30, 2000.  For an application for any of the following

Position Title: Web Programmer 

The Web Programmer under the direction of the Internet Director will
create web enabled databases and middleware applications to facilitate
access to the Centennial Exposition Digital Collection on the FLP Web
Site. In addition the web programmer will oversee the work of a scanning
technician and supervise quality control activities for the project. 

Position Description and Duties: 

The Web Programmer will report to the Internet Director and work closely
with the Project Director to complete the tasks described below. 

     Create an CEDC database and application to serve as the framework
for completing        the digitization and cataloging.

     Create web accessible thesaurus database to be used by the project
catalogers and       the final presentation application.

     Create web enabled views of the database for presentation on the
FLP Web site.

     Review digital images and assure quality control of all formats.

     Perform other related duties as required.

Experience with MS SQL Server 7 and Pervasive's Tango preferred.

Salary:  $35,000 plus medical benefits.
Duration:  one year; December 1, 1999-November 30, 2000


Position Title: Scanning/Collections Preparation Technician

Position Description and Duties:

The Scanning/Collections Preparation Technician performs all tasks
connected with the conversion of the Centennial Photographic Collection
and other materials to be included in the Centennial Exposition Digital
Collection (CEDC) to all required digital formats. The Scanning/
Collections Preparation Technician will report to the Web Programmer and
work closely with project staff to complete the tasks described below:

	Organize, label, and prepare collection materials for scanning.
	Scan materials and check scans for acceptability and quality, record
information         about scans in the CEDC application and save digital
files according to                 established procedures and standards.

	Monitor condition and security of collection items during use and
rehouse               collection materials after use.

	Participate as required in the process of converting text to digital
formats,           including typing, proofreading and performing OCR
tasks.

	Perform other related duties are required.

Experience with the Agfa DuoScan TL2000 a plus but not required

Salary:  $24,000 plus medical benefits
Duration:  one year; December 1, 1999-November 30, 2000
