The Rivera Library seeks an innovative, energetic, and service-oriented
librarian to join its Reference Services Department in providing reference
and instruction services and furthering the development and use of the
Library's electronic resources. 

Responsibilities:  Develop and conduct instruction sessions in the use of
electronic resources and research methods; provide general reference
service to a diverse user community in the humanities, social sciences, and
business; create user education materials in print and web-based formats;
and actively contribute to enhancing the usability and content of the
Library's web site.  Also assists with hardware/software support and
ongoing staff training in the uses of new library technology. Some evening
and weekend hours are required.  Reports to the Head of Reference Services. 

Qualifications: Required:  Graduate degree in Library Science. Knowledge of
a wide range of print and electronic information resources, teaching or
training experience, and expertise using the Web as an information
resource.  Demonstrated skill in web site development and facility working
with information technology. Excellent oral and written communication
skills.  Evidence of  flexibility, enthusiasm, and collegiality.
Preferred: One year academic library reference and instruction experience.

Library Environment:  The University Library of the University of
California, Riverside (UCR), is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries. Its collections include 1.9 million volumes and 13,000 current
serials housed in four libraries: the Tomas Rivera Library,  the Music
Library, the Media Library,  and the newly opened Science Library.  The
Tomas Rivera Library is undergoing a major renovation which is scheduled
for completion in Fall 2001. 

UCR Library  provides electronic access to information through the
nine-campus California Digital Library (formerly called the MELVYL System);
SCOTTY (the UCR Library Catalog), an Innovative Interfaces system; a
comprehensive UCR Library web page (http://library.ucr.edu); the
award-winning INFOMINE (http://infomine.ucr.edu), a database/search engine
of selected academic web resources; and a network of CD-ROM resources. 

Campus and Community Environment: Located 60 miles east of Los Angeles and
50 miles west of Palm Springs, the 1200-acre park-like campus is
experiencing rapid growth under a vigorous campus administration committed
to library excellence.  Over 500 faculty members teach and advise UCR's
student body of over 10,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional

Appointment: The successful candidate will be appointed to the Librarian
Series, at the salary level  appropriate to the candidate's qualifications
and experience.  Research, publication and service to the university and
profession are expected for continuing promotion. Librarians are academic
appointees and accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick
leave at the rate of one day per month. The University offers a broad range
