Retrospective Metadata Project

Hi All,

Thanks in advance for any help - I've been asked if there are any
tools available that can help automate the process of adding metadata
to existing html, pdf and ms-office type files.

I'm aware of some automatic metadata tools but these seem to operate
with the idea that one is creating a file at the time that you add the
metadata.  What about a tool that has some scripts or processes that 
one can run against a set of existing files or a filesystem, adding a 
default set of metadata tags to all of them?
