INTERNET OR DATABASE DEVELOPERS AND SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATORS
Library-Web Technology Office
Filing Deadline: Open Until Filled
Hiring Salary Range: Salary Commensurate with Experience
3 openings. 100% career (2) and casual (1) positions available.
Payroll Title: Programmer/Analyst II or III.
As one of the top 100 research libraries in the world, the UCSD Libraries
are developing the in-house talent to design and build tomorrow's digital
library. The Web Technology Office, which manages the main UCSD Web site,
as well as library Web infrastructure, has several exciting and challenging
new positions opening on our digital development team. These include
positions for Application and Internet Developers, Database Developers, and
Systems Administrators.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be selected in order to build the
strongest team, and should have one or more of the following individual
skills:
Demonstrated ability to write, debug, and fix program code, write
documentation, and design and layout Web graphics
and interfaces.
Skill and production experience in Java, C++, JavaScript, Perl and Mod
PERL, Tcl, PHP, and/or other CGI or modular
object-oriented scripting languages, in conjunction with Sybase, Oracle, or
MS SQL to generate dynamic Web content.
Experience with UNIX administration and shell scripting, creating and
maintaining automated scripts and code, configuring and managing Netscape,
MS-IIS, and Apache Web servers, and monitoring Internet security (including
session management and SSL).
Knowledge of Internet protocols (HTTP, FTP, GOPHER, WAIS, NNTP, MIME, and
UDP.).
Experience with relational database design, XML, software testing and
integration, version control systems, and development/distribution
methodologies.
B.S. degree in a technical or scientific discipline (computer science,
engineering, math, or physics) preferred.
Excellent written and oral communication skills preferred.
Flexibility to function effectively in an environment that has rapidly
shifting and often contradictory demands and priorities preferred.
Ability to work in a team environment preferred.
Library experience a plus.
Appointment at the higher level requires one or more of the following:
Advanced skills and experience with the above programming languages and
scripts.
Project/team management skills in project design and development.
Substantial experience with UNIX administration.
In-depth understanding of common computer intrusion methods and
countermeasures.
Broad, in-depth knowledge in area of expertise with an understanding and
advanced ability to independently analyze needs and requirements, develop
optimal project strategies, and implement systems for complex applications.
The UCSD Libraries offer technical staff a relaxed,
