Temporary Reference Librarian

RANK/TITLE OF VACANCY & DEPARTMENT

Lecturer, Reference Librarian, in the SOU Library

TYPE OF APPOINTMENT

One year-fixed term, non-renewable (nine month), full-time. 
Appointment effective September 16, 1999.

EDUCATION

Required: ALA accredited MLS 

EXPERIENCE

Required: Experience or training in general reference services;
experience or significant training in the use of electronic
information resources, including citation and full-text databases,
electronic journals, World Wide Web, and both on-site and remote
databases.  Skills in website creation and management;  experience in
using a variety of computer applications;  teaching experience or
training in library instruction.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

Reference librarian, with general reference duties including night
and regular Saturday hours (possibly Tuesday through Saturday). 
Participates in an active and extensive bibliographic instruction
program in the freshman writing courses and other classes, depending
on subject expertise.  Assists the Instruction Librarian in Distance
Education activities, including web page creation and website
management.  Collection development responsibilities in areas of
expertise.  

DETAILS ABOUT ABILITIES DESIRED

Recent experience in an academic library reference setting. 
Excellent reference skills and the ability to interact effectively
with students, faculty, and community patrons.   Effectiveness in
providing bibliographic instruction at all levels, including the
ability to create specialized lectures for a variety of situations. 
Skill and confidence in using a wide variety of traditional and
electronic information resources, including CD-ROM databases, Internet
resources, remote databases, and electronic journals.  Experience in
website creation and management.  Strong communication skills and the
ability to work effectively with librarians, staff, and other faculty.
Ability to balance and prioritize diverse responsibilities in an
energetic, dynamic collegial setting.

SALARY

$24,000 for nine month academic year.
