Bread then ;-)

Bread then, they definitely put the bread so you have to go through the
store. ;-)

I don't think it is an either/or method. Any modern retail facility
pays very close attention to traffic flow and control and mixes and
matches for the greater affect. It goes down to the shelf level.
Everything is measured nowadays. Like why gumboil machines are eye
level to a four year old. Why do bookstores put the Cafe by the
magazines and impulse type pubs in between it and the cash register?

If a library has the budget, a retail analyst or interior retail
architect may be able to shed some light on this.

The best site I know for the fundamentals of getting people to task in
information design, frequently cited at web4lib, is useit.com: Jakob
Nielsen's Web site An enduring classic.

A company I know saw that people filled out an entire set of forms and
went through 4 or 5 processes before they were asked for a credit card
number and then 80% promptly backed out right before completion.
Simplifying the process again and placing the credit card piece between
two more personalized choices on one page helped. So did reinforcing
the idea that people that you will spend. Note that the Network
Solutions new site says Congratulations if you pick an open URL.
Are their signs and posters that reinforce patron behavior?
