width of box in pull down menus

As you may well know, I am in the middle of redesigning our main library
webpage with some redesigning of other pages to follow.
The basis of the new design is a series of pull down menus. I would like to
see the width of the menus to be the same. Is there any way of doing that
short of padding them with some character such as a hyphen? Also, is it
possible to bold text with in a pull down menu?
