Apache limits on access.conf

Has anyone out there ever discovered whether Apache has any sort of limit
on lists of IP ranges listed in access.conf or .htaccess for restricting
access?  I can't find anything in the server documentation, but OhioLINK's
list of allowed IP ranges is now over 400, and I want to know if I'm
risking performance problems or crashes.

We're using Apache 1.3.0 and 1.3.1.  (Hmm, I see they snuck 1.3.2 out the
door already...)
