Remote access to databases

A remote user can only grab one of your ip addresses if your college is
the user's internet service provider. If your users connect to the
internet through a variety of commercial ISPs, the IP authentication
method is not an option for you. Some database vendors - IAC is one -
offer alternative methods for remote authentication. Last I heard, IAC's
method required that the library ftp them a file of user names and
passwords every week or so. Other vendors will allow you to refer users
from a password-protected page on your library's web site.
