Invitation

to participate at the 4th European Bielefeld Colloquium

Stadthalle Bielefeld, February 10-12, 1998

After three successful conferences the 4th European Bielefeld
Colloquium in February 1998 will concentrate on the relationship
of publishers and libraries in the information society and the
role of regions, states and the European Union in the context of
the world wide communication networks. For the 1998 conference we
are expecting statements from high-ranking political
representatives.

The printed programme is enclosed in this letter of invitation. If
there are any changes and further information, please find them on
Internet at http://www.ub.uni-bielefeld.de/aktuell/koll-eng.htm

Traditionally, this conference is organized by three partners: The
British Council, Cologne, the Buchhändler-Vereinigung, Frankfurt
am Main, and the University of Bielefeld. We are expecting 600
participants from more than 20 countries.

In view of electronic publications the information market still
changes rapidly and emphatically. New kinds of electronic
publications are continuously being created. Similarly, the number
and size of the products is increasing. In view of that, libraries
and publishers have to and will find a new distribution of roles
in the information process.

What will the role of libraries and publishers be in the future?
Function and position of the partners involved in the information
process will probably be subject to a continuous process of
change.

The conference will take a closer look at the role of electronic
publications, its manufacturers and libraries on the information
market, mainly regarding present and future services of libraries
and publishers. The competition between different technical and
economical ways of electronic information, its importance in the
market etc., will be discussed as well as the distribution of
information in the international networks, particularly on the
INTERNET.

The conference will be combined with an exhibition. It will show
electronic publications to be used in library networks and
networking technologies for electronic publications. Relevant
hardware and software for libraries and publishers will be
presented as well.

The conference will be held in the excellent facilities of the
Stadthalle Bielefeld, close to the main railway station and hotel
facilities in the city centre.

We are inviting all librarians interested in or already using any
kind of electronic publications, and all publishers and
booksellers interested in the technology and distribution of
electronic publications in the library market.

To keep the travel budgets for participants as clear as possible,
we managed to organize this conference without registration fees.
For organizational reasons we would be thankful for returning the
registration form as soon as possible.

For the participants of our conference we have inquired special
conditions for hotels of varying prices. There are several hotels
situated in walking distance of the congress centre (i.e.: RAMADA
HOTEL GARNI; HOTEL MERCURE). The tourist information will take
care of your hotel reservation. Please use the enclosed form.

Yours sincerely,

(Dr. K. W. Neubauer)
