Authentication Schemes

I am looking for a search engine that I can use to validate patron 
library card numbers.  I can export a list of valid numbers from our system.
I can also build a script in PERL that searches the file with a yes or no.

If it is a valid number, it will hand them access to databases.  My 
problem is that the number of card numbers is large - 200,000.  Searching 
a text file alone takes too long.

Anyone know of a cheap search engine that will index the file?
