Just found two additional messages with resources I forgot to include the
first time I posted this message. This message includes all the resources,
starting with the two I missed first time around.
I received a number of replies to my request for Web sites that provide
access to Geographic Information Systems data sets. Thanks to all of you
who replied, you've provided me with a wealth of information!
Ive listed the sites below with either the original senders' or [my]
annotations:

State of Wyoming Office of GIS
The Wyoming Library Association recently sponsored a workshop at
our annual library conference which included a presentation from
the State of Wyoming Office of GIS. The handout from the class
is available at:
http://will.state.wy.us/training/gis_handout.html
and further information from the Wyoming OGIS can be found at:

The New York State GIS Clearinghouse
Focuses on NYS data, but on our Related Sites page there are links to other
states' GIS web sites, federal sites (e.g. sources for census data), and
links to several GIS directory sites, including one sponsored by ESRI
(maker of ArcView). See:

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/ol/about/ncdcnoaa.html
Within the U.S. Department of Commerce is the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA conducts research and gathers data
about the oceans, atmosphere, space, and sun, and applies this knowledge to
products and services that benefit Americans. The National Climatic Data
Center is one of three National Data Centers under the National
Environmental Satellite, Data,
and Information Service (NESDIS), one of the NOAA Line Offices. NCDC is the
world's largest active archive of weather data. NCDC produces numerous
climate publications and responds to data requests from all over the world.
NCDC operates the World Data
Center-A, Meteorology which is collocated at NCDC. NCDC's web site has
received a number of awards. NCDC supports a three tier national climate
services support program - the partners include: NCDC, Regional Climate
Centers (RCC's), and State Climatologists.
