Technology Coordinator
Appleton Public Library

The Appleton Public Library is seeking a highly motivated individual to
join our Library management team as the head of our newly created Network
Services Section.  This position manages the Library's Local Area Network
and World Wide Web Server, including coordination of maintenance, repairs
and upgrades of hardware and software; evaluation and assistance with
implementation of appropriate technologies into library services;
participation in decision making regarding technological solutions.
Coordinates library web site development and works cooperatively with other
agencies in web site development.  Some evening and weekend work is
required.  Position requires experience in LAN management, Internet
applications and microcomputer systems plus an Associate's degree or higher
in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field or a Master's
Degree in Library Science.  Salary range begins at $37,000 plus an

Technology Coordinator

Nature of Work

This is a generalist technical  position.  Work includes day to day
management of the Library's LAN and World Wide Web server, including
coordination of maintenance, repairs and upgrades of hardware and software;
 evaluation and assistance with implementation of appropriate technologies
into library services;  participation in decision making regarding
technological solutions.  Coordinates library web site development and
works cooperatively with other agencies in web site development.  Work is
performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director.  (Some
evenings and weekends may be required.)


Job Functions

Essential Job Functions

· Administers, installs, configures, updates and troubleshoots LAN file
servers, web server, printers and workstations.  Monitors and maintains
systems.  
· Takes initiative in identifying and solving network problems.
· Coordinates setup, maintenance and repair of hardware
· Evaluates, recommends and assists in implementation of appropriate
technologies in library service areas.
· Develops, coordinates and assists with instruction for in-house staff
training programs.
· Prepares Requests for Proposals for technological services; participates
in selection of vendors; works with vendors through installation and
maintenance.
· In conjunction with the APL web committee, plans, develops, and maintains
the library web site.  Works with other agencies, such as the City of
Appleton and FOCOL, on the development of their sites.
· Trains others in HTML editing and coordinates efforts of those working on
web pages.
· Supervises the work of part time technology assistant.


Other Job Functions
· Participates on library wide task force(s).
· Serves as a part of the library management team.


 Requirements of Work


Requires experience with LAN management, Internet applications, and
microcomputer systems and an Associate's  Degree or higher in Computer
Science, Information Science, Computer Engineering, or related field; or
any combination of experience and training which provides the following
knowledge abilities and skills:

· Familiarity and experience with at least one  networking software
platform, such as Novell Netware or Windows NT Server, and the ability to
learn others as necessary.
· Knowledge of HyperText Markup Language and some experience writing web
pages and using telnet, ftp and other Internet utilities.  Experience with
UNIX system administration and maintenance of a web site on a UNIX platform
would be a plus.
· Knowledge of and ability to instruct others in operating system use,
office software, and web building programs. .  Must be able to work
comfortably, patiently and helpfully with people whose computer skills vary
from beginner to expert.
· Evidence of problem-solving skills and ability to meet deadlines in a
project environment.
· Knowledge of microcomputers, CD-ROMs, word processing, spreadsheets and
microcomputer database management programs, and the ability to instruct
others in their use.
· Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
· Ability to create and maintain files, documentation and records in an
organized orderly fashion.
· Demonstrated ability to work with others cooperatively.
· Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration.
· Preferred qualification:  Master's in Library or Information Science
and/or experience in a library environment.
