There are two library faculty positions currently available for
applications at California State University/Monterey Bay:

Announcement of Two Vacancies:

CSUMB is a comprehensive university which values academic quality and
the integration of learning, working, and residential living, in a
multicultural and interdisciplinary community. The campus is located on
scenic and historic Monterey Bay on land which was formerly part of the
Fort Ord army base. CSUMB is being recognized for its multicultural
curriculum, commitment to technology, portfolio assessment,
outcomes-based multidisciplinary programs, innovative methods for the
delivery of teaching and learning, and community service as an integral
part of the curriculum.

The curriculum is focused on meeting the students’ educational and
social needs of the 21st century. Students are required to demonstrate
competency in their chosen fields as part of an overall process to
ensure educational excellence, relevance, continuous institutional
renewal, and ongoing assessment of student, faculty, and program
quality. CSUMB seeks faculty who are interested in joining a small,
flexible, committed, and high quality academic community.

The Library Learning Complex is part of CSUMB’s Center for Science,
Technology and Information Resources, which also includes Information
Technology, New Media Services, the Technology Learning Collaborative,
the Spatial Information Visualization and Analysis (SIVA) Center,
Development of On-line Learning (DOLL), and the following academic
institutes (departments):  Teledramatic Arts and Technology;
Communications Science and Technology; Earth Systems Science and
Policy; and Mathematical Sciences and Applications.

Collection development at the Library emphasizes electronic and digital
resources as the preferred format when available and economically
feasible. Students, faculty, and staff may also avail themselves of
unlimited access to external collections via Document
Delivery/Interlibrary Loan.  The local CSUMB collections number 37,000
volumes, 350 print subscriptions, and 500 videos.

1)  Bibliographic Services Coordinator
Senior Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Library Director, the Bibliographic
Services Coordinator applies standard resource description systems and
provides leadership in the application of emerging standards, such as
the Dublin Core, for describing electronic resources in the development
of the CSUMB Library.  The Coordinator is responsible for leadership
and innovative planning, implementing, and managing workflow and
services for acquiring, describing, and preserving the library’s
collection of electronic/digital resources, print, and media.  The
successful candidate is responsible for resourceful utilization of the
technical services modules of the automated library system, Endeavor’s
Voyager, and will lead in the further implementation of the appropriate
modules in collaboration with the Technology Development Coordinator. 
Works collaboratively with the Coordinator for Collections and Resource
Development in managing approval plans.  Administers vendor’s
shelf-ready acquisitions service for the library and copy cataloging
for direct-ordered and gift materials and serials.  Performs original
cataloging when necessary.  Collaborates with the Electronic Resources
Coordinator in:  integrating electronic monographs, serials and
databases into the library catalog; developing strategies for access to
digital library information; taking new approaches to description and
classifying in the electronic environment; and evaluating and
implementing metadata solutions for electronic information resources. 
Collaborates with the Electronic Resources Coordinator and the
Electronic Technologies Coordinator in developing solutions in the
access, retrieval, and preservation of electronic resources for the
CSUMB Library.  Supervises two staff in acquisitions and cataloging. 

Minimum Qualifications:  MLS or equivalent degree from an
ALA-accredited institution.  Minimum of three years of professional
experience in technical services in an academic library or comparable
environment.  Knowledge of current acquisitions and descriptive and
subject cataloging principles and practices.  Direct experience with
Web-based catalogs.  Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written
communication.  Sensitivity to and demonstrated interest in forwarding
CSUMB’s academic goals, as identified in the University Vision
Statement (see below).  Demonstrated success in highly collaborative
library and university settings.  Excellent sense of humor.  As this is
a faculty appointment, the successful candidate is responsible for
meeting campus criteria for retention, tenure and promotion, including
classroom instruction.  

Preferred Qualifications:  Experience in managing some or all modules
of an integrated library system.  Supervisory experience in a library
or similar setting.  Experience in organizing library resources in a
Web environment and in describing electronic/digital resources in the
integrated library system environment.  Experience in managing serials
in both printed and electronic formats.  Awareness of current and
emerging standards for resource description.  Demonstrated
understanding of user needs in information access in the on-line
environment.  Familiarity with archiving and maintaining electronic and
digital resources.  SGML or HTML experience.  Second subject degree in
a discipline related to the campus academic program.  Reading and
speaking proficiencies in a second language.

Salary Range:  approximately $40,000 - $52,500.  Appointment Date:  on
or after May 1, 1999.

2) Electronic Resources Coordinator
Senior Assistant Librarian
(#MBERC-9903)

Under the general direction of the Library Director, this position
coordinates the Library's efforts in Web design and development to
facilitate the role of technology in teaching and learning.  Assumes
primary responsibility for and serves as coordinator of the CSUMB
Library Web site.  Establishes and ensures consistent user interface
and develops design templates and policies for the development,
organization and content of library Web pages.  Serves as a resource
for Web page developers and as project manager for library Web-based
initiatives.  Provides expertise on technology development and trends
and applications of new Web technologies, including library instruction
in distributed education.  Leads training efforts for library faculty
and staff in Web-based technologies.  In collaboration with the
Technology Development Coordinator, selects Web authoring software,
manages Web space, and develops creative solutions to maintenance,
archiving, and presenting information in the distributed electronic
environment, including technology-based library instruction
development.  Collaborates with the Bibliographic Services Coordinator
in:  integrating electronic monographs, serials and databases into the
library catalog; developing strategies for organization and access to
digital library information; taking new approaches to description and
classification in the electronic environment; and evaluating and
implementing metadata solutions for electronic information resources. 
Collaborates with the Bibliographic Services Coordinator and the
Technology Development Coordinator in developing solutions in the
access, retrieval, and preservation of electronic resources for the
CSUMB Library.  Participates in developing library collections in
assigned subject and interdisciplinary areas and in the reference and
instructional programs of the Library.  Participates in the Library
Management Council and in the Library Services Group.

University Vision Statement (see below).  Demonstrated success in
highly collaborative library and university settings.  Excellent sense
of humor.  As this is a faculty appointment, the successful candidate
is responsible for meeting campus criteria for retention, tenure and

distributed learning in higher education.  Familiarity with maintaining
electronic and digital resources and related archival implications. 
Experience in integrating text, graphic, and multimedia sources in a
digital library environment.  Second subject degree in a discipline
related to the campus academic program.  Reading and speaking
proficiencies in a second language.

Salary Range:  approximately $40,000 - $44,000.  Appointment Date:  on
or after May 1, 1999.
