THE LOCATION
Chania is the westernmost prefecture of Crete, with the City of Chania as
its capital. It has a rich historical heritage. The earliest settlements
were Neolithic and Minoan dating as early as 2500 BC. The city of Chania is
the second most populous town in Crete. Trying to remain untouched by the
development of tourism, it is still stangely reminiscent of the days when it
was the administrative capital of Crete.
The sights of the City of Chania are concentrated mainly in the Old Town
which is centered around the pretty Venetian Harbor. The old Venetian
lighthouse lies at its entrance, opposite the historic Firka Fortress and
the Naval Museum. The Archaeological Museum is housed in the basilica of St.
Francis, a Venetian church from the 14th century. Further south is the
Cathedral. At the boundary with the New Town is the Public Market with its
own characteristic color and in the New Town itself the beautiful Public
Gardens.
Conference location
The conference center of the Technical University of Crete, in the City of
Chania, 6 km far from Campus.
TRANSPORTATION
Most overseas visitors will arrive at the Chania International Airport,
which is located approximately 15 km. from the Conference Center. It is
recommended to take a taxi to the hotel at a cost of approximately 4,000
Drs. Alternatively airport buses can transfer passengers to Chania center
and then get a taxi to the hotel for 500 Drs., or a local bus.
If visitors arrive by boat to the port of Souda, transfer facilities are
similar (taxi recommended) at about the same price. Chartered flights weekly
from Europe to Chania.
You can travel around the island by bus, rented car, and organized tours and
by yacht. You can also travel to Peloponnese, Dodekanissos and Cyclades
islands by ship. Accommodation of every kind is to be found all over Crete,
from luxury to E class.
CLIMATE
The climate at the time of the Symposium is very mild. It very seldom rains,
the temperature in May is 20-27° C, and the sea is usually calm.
CURRENCY
Greece's currency is the drachma. Typical conversion rates (at time of
print) are ECU 335 Drs., $US 310 Drs., Deutsche Mark 169 Drs., English Pound
505 Drs., French Frank 50 Drs.
